The ELANA technique is invented by professor Tulleken from the University Medical Center (UMC) in Utrecht, The Netherlands. In contrast to the conventional technique, the ELANA technique facilitates the construction of a bypass without the need to temporarily close the recipient brain artery.
The ELANA technique is only concerned with how the bypass is connected to the artery in your brain. This is a relatively short step in the entire operation. It generally takes less than one hour. It can take two or more hours in exceptionally difficult situations. The ELANA technique involves the use of the Elana Arteriotomy System, which contains the products that are neccessary to create the bypass non-occlusive.
The Elana Arteriotomy System has been approved in Europe and Canada.
In the US, the Elana Arteriotomy System is investigational and is currently not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of patients. The FDA is the government appointed organization for these matters in the United States. It is possible for patients in the USA to have a bypass created with the use of the Elana Arteriotomy System, since a research study is conducted in several centers in the USA and Europe.
